I didn't read this until now so I apologize for that. What type of hunting are you looking to tag along with? Summer groundhog shooting or fall deer hunting? Or whatever? I'm not that close but not really that far either.

Experience with Hornady SST on deer?

The only one I've ever recovered was from a caribou shot at 335yds quartering away. The bullet went through about 42" of animal and stuck in hide after blowing out the shoulder. I cleaned it up it weighs 88 grains. About 1/2" diameter jagged edge mushroom with about an 1/8" of bullet shank on...

Experience with Hornady SST on deer?

The 154 SST works extremely well on pretty much anything out of the 7. I've taken groundhogs, pronghorn, whitetail, mulies, a couple of caribou, red stags, elk.. oh and I shot a red squirrel with one once too! Interestingly, while the SST will shoot 5/8" all day long out of my gun the 154...

    help 6.5 bullet suggestions

I have shot the 140 Bergers out of my 6.5x284 for the last 4 years. I've taken ground hogs at 15 yards to a Whitetail at 1100. Positive expansion at 1100 albeit not impressive as the impact velocity was low. I've not had an issue with them and wouldn't hesitate to use them on a once in a...

    Australian sambar DeeR hunting

Hunting for them in California still goes on although in extremely limited numbers. 3 -5 stags per year I think was the last I had read. The Florida hunt is a 3day primitive camping archery only hunt on an island accessible only by boat. Very low success but would be a great 3 day adventure...

6.5mm 140 Berger VLD for LARGE mulie bucks?

Lapua Brass, CCI 200, 56g H1000 *** (this is over max suggested in loading manual but has shown no pressure signs in my gun) Sorry it took me so long to get back. (Realize that the charge listed may not be safe in your gun and proceed at your own risk.)

6.5mm 140 Berger VLD for LARGE mulie bucks?

Michael, I run the 140 Berger out of my 6.5 exclusively. MV 2940 the bullet still gives positive expansion at 1100 yds on deer. As you can see from the other posts the short range effects are devastating.

AWESOME GOAT! Congrats on that goat and it's a good story too.

    6.5 140 smk

I would advise against them on deer. I shot a number of them along with the 142smk and had dismall results on groundhogs with the 140. No expansion whatsoever with the 140. They performed drastically different that the 142. Also shot along side a fellow with a 6.5 Gibbs and he couldn't kill a...

    2011 Mule Buck

Congrats! and I appreciate your decision on knowing your own limitations due to the conditions and opting for a different shot. Well done!

Is the 140 gr VLD really great for deer?

This one ran about 50 yards after being hit through the lungs at 1100yds with one out of a 6.5x284. This was yellow box match bullet prior to Berger marketing both match and orange box hunting bullets. I honestly couldn't tell you off the top of my head what the difference between the two are...
