    Custom hunting .30-378

yobuck Dually noted on shot placement over cartridge, speed, or power. I do understand the concept, and can add that probably more bears have been killed in AK with a .30-06 than any other cartidge. Your recommendation on a .300 RUM is probably the more practical and cost effective...

    Custom hunting .30-378

Pjracer I'm right with ya on the bullet selection. Partitions or accubonds are at the top of my list. I might go up to the 220s but will start with the 200s. Oh yeah and on the "hunter becomes hunted" my dad will have a .338 and guide will have a .375, just in case!!!!

    Custom hunting .30-378

Bajabill I arrived at this caliber for a couple reasons. First, this hunt is probably not going to be a frequent trip for me (unfortunately). So, I didn't want to buy a gun that I would only have the opportunity to use once or twice. For example, the .33s or the .375s would be ideal for...

    Custom hunting .30-378

That is a pretty nice scope, and a good deal for it. I'm a bit skeptical of that range though. 8.5 on the low end seems pretty high if I were to get a sub-100 yard shot. I would hate to walk up on a grizz, and not be able to get the whole thing in view!

    Custom hunting .30-378

Geeeeeeeeezzzzzzz Broz!!! That's pretty dern sweet. You sure you don't want to cut a deal to a good ol Missouri boy?!?! All kiddin aside, I'll probably go with a leupold. Their solid, great warranty, and will do the job untill I can save up for a nightforce

Southernfryed Yeah, I agree with you on the turret issue with the 6500. I think the Elite 4200 6-24x50 has them on it. I was thinking something more along the lines of a 2.5/4-16x42; but we'll see. I suppose now that I have the gun approval from all of the guys on the board, my next decision is...

    Custom hunting .30-378

The rifle will be purchased retail from SW. It is right down the street from me and frankly, they've let me drool so much over that gun that I figure I owe it to them. Via the title of the thread, I had thought about doing it custom; but was reassured that the Accumark was a good solid platform...

    Custom hunting .30-378

Southernfryedyankee Nope, I haven't shot a 30-378. I know the recoil will be substantial, compared to what I more regularly shoot (30-30,30.06,.270). I have shot larger magnums and reacted well to the recoil. Being that the hunt is not for another year and a half, I wanted to purchase the gun...

    Custom hunting .30-378

My dad and I always handloaded Partitions(except for the 30-30 of course). I know Partitions are a darn good bullet; but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm sure it will also depend on how it shoots out of the gun too.

    Custom hunting .30-378

Thanks Steve. For now I'll probably be shooting 200gr or 220 for the AK trip, so I'll have a good dose of pushback from those. I'm sure a limbsaver will be going on soon after the purchase. Odds are I'll be using the brake most of the time during practice situations; but I might take it off for...

    Custom hunting .30-378

Britz Understood on the recoil issue. I have shot larger magnum rifles (.375hh, .375ruger, .338wm, etc.). The .30-30 was my rifle back in MO when I was younger and I couldn't see past 100 yards. Since then I've just been borrowing a .270 for mule deer here in AZ. But, as an old timer once...

    Custom hunting .30-378

Thanks for all the replies fellas. You all confirmed my thoughts about the action. Considering the base of the .378 is only .03 in larger than a .300 RUM, I wouldn't doubt that it could fit on a 700. But, like you said LTLR, I wouldn't want to push the limit of an action. I'd rather have an...
