With average size deer, the partition-style bullet is most likely to do that “pas-through” you complained about. what you want is a controlled expansion bullet that opens quickly without (hopefully) blowing up on close shots.
The best performance I’ve had in this regard is the Speer Grand Slam...
Had it not been for an insurmountable pile of debt, I’m fairly confident the firearms manufacturing would have been moved out of Ilion before this mess.
As others have posted- I hope this new owner will get Remington turned around.
But I have another concern- and that’s the ammunition side- which was sold to a different investment company- What impact will that have on BOTH sides?
And THIS is one of my own issues. The limited land I have access to for hunting is surrounded by folks who shoot anything brown. A buck like that might even be enough to encourage them to spotlight hunt... so that deer is likely not going to make it another year in my area.
.308 is a no brained to me under the criteria you listed. It’s a great round, and easy to get to shoot well, and I personally believe a better round for your targets at 300 or less.
We are rapidly approaching the possible end of Remington products altogether. Official word is that if no buyer emerges by end of September, the company is done...
I too am a bit curious what you are actually looking for, so here is what I read in summary:
You want a bullet that:
Has the ballistics to shoot 200+ yard, 1 inch groups
Consistent massive bullet expansion at any distance from 40 to 450 yds
Bullet that dramatically drops the deer in its track...
22-250 is capable of harvesting whitetail deer up to 200yds with a decent bullet and a god shooter.
Both deer I’ve shot with my 22-250 were clean kills, one fell in place, the other jumped and ran 20 yards. But longest of those two was 100yds.
If your gun has a fast enough twist rate, 60gr...
I'm new to the 165gr. Superformance SST in my .308 and have shot two whitetails this season with them (have used the Superformance ammo in my .270 with great results).
Deer #1 was a small doe - I had to make a snap shot at fairly close range - entrance through ribs on near side, exit was...
I have far fewer opportunities for "long range" hunting than I use to, but still get to hit a few fields now and then. The quest for accuracy, reliability, and terminal performance is a never-ending journey!
I'm looking forward to learning and sharing!
