    338... a revisit on a specific build.

Kristopher- The 375 ruger is a round and has loads of potential.....just don’t think bullet selection has made it very practical yet...there are only a pair or three(under exaggeration) bullets in the the 330-350 gr range that would provide high BC and be able to attain seven velocities when...

    338... a revisit on a specific build.

Not sure if the “baffled into” things was a joke.....but I laughed... all the gasses still have to exit the end of the suppressor directly away from the shooter....so there is still a “rocket” and projectile acting in the opposite direction.....just saying...the suppressor does reduce recoil in...

    338... a revisit on a specific build.

I run a 338 Lapua with a 22” barrel and a lighter stock. The barrel was 28” but I ended up cutting it down since I acquired my suppressor and the 28 with the can was a hundred miles long. It’s a heavily flutted med Palma contour with a light weight stock and a vortex hslr FFP scope(about 24 oz)...

Best Long Range Caliber with a short barrel?

This has been something that I worked on a while. Ended up cutting my 338L from 28” to 22” for running suppressed and it was the best thing I ever did for that rifle...velocities with 300 gr (sameload) went from 2780 to 2680 for a total loss of 100 FPS. I am a believer of short barrels.

Cutting down a fluted barrel --Muzzle thread Issue

I had it cut down to 22”. Was just enough to have a little over .1” of wall thickness at the bottom of the lowest flute. Interestingly the flutes were not cut perfectly concentric to the bore. 2 were slightly deeper than the rest and there were the only 2 that interrupted the threads. I haven’t...

    338 light builds

Just trimmed my 338 Lapua down to 22” from 28” to use with my suppressor weighs 10 lbs with the can, sling, scope , and stock pack. Just under 9 without the can. Haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. Planning to run the 265 gr ABLR. Has a 22oz stock and a heavily fluted benchmark med Palma...

Cutting down a fluted barrel --Muzzle thread Issue

I am going to be making some calls on Monday. I have a few barrels to get threaded, and 2 cut and threaded. Feel like I am keeping these guys in business.

    338 L benchmark barrel

I am trying to see if there is any interest in this. I am willing to trade for an un-fluted barrel (.338) or entertain offers. My barrel shoots awesome just not sure if I would be able to cut it to 20". Thanks for looking. Dan

Cutting down a fluted barrel --Muzzle thread Issue

Hi- I would like a shorter barrel for use with a suppressor. I have a 28" fluted palma barrel in .338. The diameter of the barrel at the valley of the flute at 20" is approximately .608". The challenge I am having is finding a threat that would work. 5/8 -24 major diameter is ~0.624". This...

Brainstorming an Ultra-handy large caliber Long ranger

I am waiting for some results on this one. I have studied the ballistics with this combination a lot and it looks great!..just a lot to commit to contour a 1:10 375 barrel/chamber/ and load for without knowing the results. Not a lot of 1:10 twist 375 barrels out there with 1.2-1.25 shanks for...

Brainstorming an Ultra-handy large caliber Long ranger

It would be interesting to develope a load that that worked well in a long barrel, cut the barrel shorter, then slowly replace powder with an inert media(to maintain charge density/compression) until you see a change. I can’t imagine it being much but it would be an interesting experiment and...

Brainstorming an Ultra-handy large caliber Long ranger

Aside from being able to find a can for the larger bores....it seems that there is a rather large step up from the 338 to the 375 for barrels and bullets. Wysongdog mentioned the carbon barrels. Proof makes a 375 barrel in 22” but it is a 1:12 twist a little slow for 330-350 gr. Short 338 carbon...

Brainstorming an Ultra-handy large caliber Long ranger

Wildrose- this may or may not have any effect on the subject of faster and slower powders but one of the things I have been considering is powder volume with a given suppressor. The can I am running is rated for magnums into the 338L arena however hearing safe levels of reduction start to...

    Ballistic turret question

I make my own “ballistic” turrets with an excel spreadsheet and a waterproof label paper. Took me a bit to craft the spreadsheet (formulas, formatting, reliable printing techniques) but it works really well and I have verified labels for different conditions to 1000 yards or so multiple times. I...

Brainstorming an Ultra-handy large caliber Long ranger

I have cut a few barrels down, mostly in smaller calibers, and have found the barrels to become more forgiving(consistently more accurate) in variations in environmental conditions, etc. the suppressor may or may not change the harmonics .... 8” of fluted Palma barrels weights only slightly more...
