I'm just weighing in on the Vortex. I own 4 Vipers. I am thrilled with all of them. I put a Leupold Vari-X3 on my 270 nearly 30 years ago... cost more than the rifle did. The Vipers make the Leupold look pale by comparison.

I shoot both the .270 Winchester and the 300 Win Mag. Both shoot very "flat" and have put meat in the freezer. Both have custom barrels (Krieger and Brux respectively) so they're incredibly accurate - 1/2 MOA or less with decent hand loads. That said I could walk into any sporting goods store...

The Swift is awfully hard to beat IMHO. Ive been shooting a Rem 700 VLS 22-250 for years for long range varminting; waiting for the barrel to burn so I can do something different with it. She just won't burn down but that 12" twist..... maybe it's not a liability actually but I can't shoot...

My 2 pennies worth: my .270 Rem ADL fitted with a 26" Krieger barrel works very well at 500. So does my .300 WM Model 70 Winchester fitted with a 27" Brux barrel.

I just wanted to add that while the OP is discussing the .243, I've had similar experiences with the .270. Hydrostatic shock kills are a funny thing. When they happen it almost seems magical. It probably isn't realistic however to depend on them. Bottom line is that if you're a good enough...
