Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thanks Mike, in my "pre-reading" before starting on the neck-turning adventure I also saw that the relative sizing between expanding mandrel and turning mandrel was critical, so I got both of them when I ordered the Sinclair 4000 turning kit. The fit on the turning mandrel wasn't as tight as I...

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Dang Butterbean, I just realized from your post quoting JE Custom that it appears we have lost him. I was absent from here for quite a while. I didn't know him, but I've benefited from his advice on this forum.

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thanks Butterbean. Interestingly, I’m using the 40 degree cutter already (or at least what Sinclair sent as one—they aren’t actually labeled but it looks right—at a minimum it’s steeper than the standard cutter). If I continue to see this I’ll consider if an even steeper cutter might be...

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Hi can1010. I was actually using the 40 degree cutter they sent, so that was part of what made this interesting.

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thank you Bob. I appreciate the help. I'll get some loaded to shoot and will be interested to see how things progress. I'm looking forward to comparing how the concentricity of these once-fired cases compares to that of five never-fired cases I also neck turned. I wasn't planning to get into...

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thank you all for weighing in. I really appreciate it. I wanted to see if there would be any visible thinning from the cutter contacting the shoulder. In particular, I'm wondering if a number of the 50 I turned would need to be scrapped. I used a thin cutting wheel on my die grinder and here's...

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thanks JMW. Yes, I turned five of them and they don't show the issue. The COAL is a touch longer, but the shoulder is farther back still as it hasn't expanded to my chamber yet. I cut the two worst cases apart to see if I could see any abnormalities. Will post that in a second...

I'll check out that Gen-3 case length trimmer. Thanks for the info on it.

Here's an up close photo that I think shows it. It's as though there's a very slight bulge at where the shoulder and sidewall meet and the cutter is taking that down a bit. Maybe the brass simply didn't spring back there as much after the sizing operation?

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thanks JMW. This was once fired. I'll see how some of those look after the 2nd firing. After my sizing I'm getting between .001 and .0015 neck tension (after the expander mandrel), so I think I'm good to simply load these

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

Thanks Mike. I did trim to length, but I admittedly struggle a bit with getting perfectly consistent lengths with my trimmer (getting those locking collars in just the right spot on the Lyman Universal trimmer drives me crazy at times). I think I can sometimes put too much pressure when turning...

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

PddPdd, The Sinclair cutter has a sharp angle vs. a radius. Here's a picture. One of the things that is a bit surprising to me is that I can feel a bit of a ridge with a fingernail where the neck hits the shoulder junction from the trimming, and on the cases where I think I went too far into the...

Neck turning: Trying to turn full neck but seeing cutting high on shoulder (280 AI)

I'm new to neck turning and am using Sinclair 4000 toolset on once-fired and FL sized Nosler 280 AI brass. The problem I'm having is that on some of my cases I see cut marks high on the shoulder (junction of shoulder to sidewall), even when the cutter isn't cutting near right at the junction of...

    Browning .30-06 Semi Reloading Advice

Thank you. I already reload with standard dies for my bolt action .30-06, so I’ll stick with those. He helps me at times so I’ll see if I can get him involved in creating a load for the rifle his grandparents gave him. Great idea. When I had that rifle out yesterday, it was a stark reminder of...
