Going to be going elk hunting next fall and looking for some people with experience shooting different bullets and how they perform on an elk. Going to be taking my 300 wby and my 7mm stw as a backup.

I currently shoot 185 berger vld's in my 300 wby for deer. Been reading about them and most say they're awesome for elk also. Looking to try out the 210 vld or the 210 Nosler Accubond long range to elk hunt with.

Currently shoot 150 gr nosler ballistic tips in the stw. I know they will work but is there a better choice? Accubond or berger?

Just looking for some real world experience and any helpful advice as it will be my first elk hunting trip.

Thanks

For the STW the 154gr Interbond by Hornady is a great med/large game round especially at STW velocities. For the WBY if you plan on shooting over 400yds look at the Accubond LR or closer in the regular accubond or the Hornady Interbond.

The only lead core bullet I've never seen fail is the Interbond. Load it right, put it in the right spot, dead critter every time.

If you want to or find yourself some place that requires non toxic, the Peregrine VLR's are fantastic. Most consistent bullet I've ever fired period.

IMO use the 215 Berger hybrid target for the 300 Weatherby. Read a few pages of Broz's thread on how well those bullets worked. IIRC there were 23 one shot kills. The hybrid design makes it easier to work up an accurate load.

Thread is much longer, link here starts with the elk kills. This may be the best documented elk killing thread out there. Impact velocities, entrance and exit pictures etc

Hornady InterBonds or, REGULAR, AccuBonds for, the 7mm, REGULAR, AccuBonds or, Partitions for the 30's
If you ever shoot an, Elk at, fairly "close range" ( under 200 yd's approx.) and hit BONE, with a less than, perfect shot, you'll know,.. WHY

I have an STW and it loves the Swift Scirocco 150s. All the deer I've shot with it folded ,DRT. Super accurate too. I highly recommend it, but since they are pricey, I'd work up loads with the accubonds or Sierras.

How far do you anticipate taking a shot? Partitions, Accubonds, A-frame, any Barnes, GMX, etc. are all good choices. Tough bullet for a tough critter in a heavy-for-caliber pill.

There are good ELD-X bullets for each caliber. I have used accubonds on elk and personally like them, but you would get more foot-lbs down range with the ELD-x, just in a slightly less "tough" bullet.

If you think you might have an opportunity to shoot in close quarters the 230 Berger is another good choice. Many here use this bullet in their 300 RUMs, including me.

To date closest shot on a 6 x 6 bull at 156 yds. Center of chest out behind offside shoulder. Took two steps and died. No explosive results just a great wound channel with both shoulders free of bloodshot areas.

Been doing some reading and thinking I'm going to try the 215 vld hybrid or the 214 hammer hunter. Not sure if they'll stabilize in my rifle being a 1-10 twist but I think I'm gonna give them a try

Jeff's real world experience is hard to beat.
