What is your ULTIMATE rifle outfit for ~500yds on North American big game? Think packing WAY back/up in there with a shot of a lifetime on a trophy animal that has never seen a human.

Long/short action? Caliber? Action? Stock? Optic? Trigger? etc. Overkill is fine; what is your ULTIMATE dream rig for out to 500?
What type of North American game are we talking about? Something that you put meat on the table, or something that has claws and teeth and you become the meal of the day on the table; or a combination of both??

270 vangard 4-14shv moar timney set @ 20oz Shot it for the first time this fall since an accident. Still shoots box ammo into 3/4moa. This replaced a featherweight that was ruined in a fire. I've had this one for 20yrs now. She comes out of the closet when the conditions are crappy for hunting but nice for very long walks in the woods lol. I hope to get a 2.5,3-10 shv or nsx from Santa

For 500 yards and under, I personally don't think you can beat a 30-06, or a 308. Plenty of bullet weights and options, as well as factory ammo that can be found anywhere if you need it in a pinch. It may not be as glamorous as some other cartridges, but it will definitely get the job done. My 30-06 is light, too. Super accurate. I prefer to use a 30 cal or bigger when hunting elk or larger game, and the 30-06 fits this requirement with 180-200 gr bullets very well. But, if you choose, you can load lower bullet weights for deer and antelope, or even lighter bullets for varmits. It'a a very versatile cartridge

For deer sized game, mine is a custom 6.5 Creedmoor, 24" Proof barrel, McMillan A3 stock, Rifle Basix trigger, and a 4-14 F2 SHV. Entire rig with suppressor, 9.5 lbs.
For elk and up, custom. 300 Win Mag, 26" Proof barrel, McMillan A3 Sporter stock, Rifle Basix trigger, and a 5-20 SHV. Entire rig with suppressor 11 lbs.

With the new ELD ammo (really based on Berger bullets)- the trusty 30.06 is a candidate for 500 yards - but a Mag would be even better. Sort of also depends if you want to go for Deer - or bigger - Elk?

Actually - it might be called VLD?
