6mm Rem or ???

......I was never a 6 fan for anything but varmints etc. Over the last 10-15 yr I have been liking it more and more especially for LR paper or steel out to 1200. Lighter gun, no recoil comapritively,

With the newer bullets, and my older shoulder definitely reconsidering.

Alright you guys have me sold on the 6 Rem, now I have to figure out if the Ackley version is the way I should go..
Can anyone with an AI tell me about feeding from a bolt gun? I'm wanting hunting reliability.
Again I'm really only looking to get 115's to 3000 fps with H1000 or a similar powder so maybe an AI isn't needed

The Ackley and/or Sherman version of any cartridge is ALWAYS the way to go.

I have 3 different Ackley chamberings (.25-06 AI, .30-06 AI, and .300 Ackley)...No feeding issues.

I second that. Take away logistics no other reason not to have a case that has been improved i,e, better.

Steeper shoulder that is not causing a feed issue for type of use. No neck growth etc... Sound good
Case dimensions made for effiecent either by increasing or decreasing volume aand dimensions. Sounds good too
Longer neck for possible increased throat life and improved bullet seating and use. Ditto

The negatives or more percisely the costs: time, custom dies, reamer, handloading only / no factory ammo. To me honestly are minute compared to ammo and a quality optic. They are also more or less one time costs dies reamer etc or very infrequent with regard to extra case prep. As most on this site are exclusively handloading anyways.........

My wife has a M54 Cooper Custom Classic in 250 Sav AI and it feeds very well, we have had no issues at all. Norma are now making 257 Roberts ammo so maybe that would be a good source of brass for a 6mm AI. Redding dies are available from the basic two die sets right through to the competition die sets in 6mm AI which is a bonus.

I'm running a 6 Ackley on a Sako 85 and I love it! It comes very close to the performance of my dad's 240 Weatherby. My only drawback is that I rechambered the factory 243 to the 6 Ackley and it only has a 1:10 twist so I'm limited to 90 grain bullets and less (except 100 grain speer boat tail and 95 berger classic hunter stabilize still) It is definitely worth the time to form your brass from Norma 7x57 so you have better brass. The brass never seems to grow. Another thing I like about the 6 Ackley is the long neck since I believe will keep the flame point inside the neck rather than the throat and will help barrel life. As far as 3000 fps with a 115 bullet that is childs play haha. I have been running RL 26 in mine and had great speed and accuracy. Since I cant stop tinkering I will be playing with some Retumbo, 8133, RL23, and possibly RL16. When its time for a rebarrel I will be going to a 7 or 7.5 and will be shooting the Nosler 105 RDF and 110 SMK. The bc on the 110 is HUGE!!! I shoot both of those bullets in a 6 Dasher and they are incredible.

You cant go wrong with the 6mm Ackley!

I'm definitely leaning that direction.
When you fire from are there any steps needed to ensure the case forms correctly?
I've read that the case can stretch above the head unless a false shoulder is formed, or the bullet jammed Into the lands.
Lastly would I be able to use a standard 6 rem seating die and just buy the Ackley fl die

A correct 6AI chamber should be close as possible to .004" crush fit on virgin 6mm Remington brass.

Lee 6mm Rem seating die and Lee Collet Neck die works on Ackley Improved cartridges. Also get a 6AI Redding Body die .
The body die and Lee Collet neck die will give you the absolutly straightest ammo possible

I just got a 6mm blank and I am doing 6x47 lapua. Off the shelf dies etc and brass is quick to form from 6.5x47. I have heard the throat may last a bit longer than 6Creed

Again my goal is to get a 115 to at least 3000 FPS, with a temp stable powder, in a hunting length barrel i.e 24".

Theres not much data on the 115s, but I think it'll be right in that range considering folks are running 108s at 3100+ with H4350
