I just noticed this thread and couldn’t resist making a comment! Squirrel hunting was my favorite type of hunting, before moving to Wyoming. I wouldn’t even bow hunt deer, because it interfered with Squirrel season. I was about 9 when I killed my first (a big Fox Squirrel) with a rifle…..the upper barrel on my little Stevens 22/410 given to me by my Dad on my 8th birthday. I was hunting with my parents and an uncle or two, when our little dog treed. They were gonna give me first shot, but the squirrel was in the top of a very (did I say “very”) tall pine. I didn’t think the 410 would do the job, so I tried with the .22. This was my transition to rifles only Squirrel hunting. Over the years I used a couple of different 22 rifles, even took a few with a Browning Nomad 22 semi-auto handgun! However, perhaps my most enjoyable hunting was with my .308Win. I started hand loading @ 14 with a Lee Loader, then at around 19 starting casting…..first for handguns then for the little .308. I really enjoyed taking squirrels with my cast bullet loads (head shots obviously) and even took a few by “barking” them. I had read about some of the early pioneers taking squirrels with their .30 cal. boa powder rifles…..and thought it would be pretty neat to try it! It’s been 38 years since I sat under a Beech or Hickory tree in the “Flats” of Evangeline Parish in La. I still miss those cool Fall Mornings Squirrel hunting near my grandparent’s home! memtb
