Some pictures from the fishing season

Sorry for the gigantic size. These were in Sept. Fishing was like this From about Aug 8th till early November. These were 100#class bluefin. Fun on a spinning rod, however every now and again a big fish will grab the lure as they were mixed in all season. When that happens your going to have an epic battle in which your likelyhood of success is below 30%. In the depth these were shot that would be closer to less than 2%. Here is a pic of a good friend fighting a fish that was 85" about 350# live.

20537.jpeg This is a friend that was next to us. We fought a fish in this class for 5.5hrs before we broke off. Notice the broken rod on the spinning reel. That's a ghost hunter rod designed for large(although not like this fish) tuna. Fish was released due to the season being closed.
Guess the weight?

The swordfish and yellowfin pics were from October. We were chumming butterfish and using 3 rods for swords with squid/heavy leader(300-400#test) The yellowfin were caught by dropping jigs. Tough overnight for us. We lost 2 swords one a real big fish the other about the same as the 125#er in the pic. The yellowfins were in the 100#classand close to the surface. We were seeing them dart in and out of the lights. Which is really neat. We lost 3 of those due to breaking off our bigger gaff hook on the sword. Hard to wrestle them into the boat with a small 3' gaff.
The big bluefin was caught with a scientific angler plug. If you go to their site they have the story 2hr fight the broken rod and all. The angler was a hs student of a good friend of mine. On that day there were fish everywhere chasing half beaks We were off of them about 50 yds chasing 100# class fish when a school of the really big fish came up. It's fun but it is grueling also. I have some more I will try to get up of the bigger fish

This fish is in the 140-150# class 65" Cool story We were codfishing for a winter freezer trip. It was later than I thought and I started putting stuff away for the run home. Dave said he was going to make one more drop. Now the previous 2 drops we lost 3 rigs between the 4 of us to presumably porbeagle sharks. When this hit it took off. Dave handed the rod to my buddy Jim because it was smoking the small reel he was using. About 20 minutes in said the rod seems to be pulsing rather than the steady pull like a shark. Jim gave me the rod and I fought it for another 10 minutes or so and it came up tail wrapped. We started laughing when it was gaffed because it wasn't wrapped however 3 of the 4 teaser hooks 7/0 gammakatsu octopus hooks. These are small for fish bigger than about 15#. Anyway these 3 hooks stuck while the cod jig had broken off the bottom of the rig and was flopping around free.

These are older however very neat to see this behavior. These white marlin are tailing. This happens in this area due to the very high mixed layer depth or thermocline. They will not go below it when you get this phenomenon. They will drop out once they hit where another water mass is pushed into this water though. Usually it is much warmer on the surface than this type of water
