I was in the same boat with my hand me down 1970's savage youth 30-06 that kicked like a mule. If I could do it all over again I would go with the 131 blackjack .257 bullet and put a vias break on it. I re-chambered my 30-06 to a 25-06 with a vias break and it produces .3 MOA and has recoil like a 223. My only regret is I didn't go with the blackjack 131 bullet. The 25-06 will take any game in north america. It is exceptionally well on deer, antelope, and hogs. 9 times out of 10 they never take another step and I have yet to see one go more than 20 yards from impact. The 6.5-06 would be an excellent direction to go as well.
