I have had the experience of "OTHER" Shooters claiming that they need another barrel after a set amount of rounds fired. My observation is that they have someone tell them that their barrel is shot out after a set amount of rounds.. here are several things you can do to to extend your barrel life. If you are in competition seeking one hole groups is one thing and another if you are using for hunting and need 1/4" to 1/2". Most Hunter are happy with 1" groups due to their calibers or them not being able to shoot past 600yrds. 1. Shoot it until you definitely have a change in group size 1/2 + from original -for positive. Make sure that you have checked you scope mounts & action to the stock, then cleaned you barrel and have no copper build up or Carbon Ring. As far as Carbon Rings go-Make sure that it is a "Carbon Ring". I see too many shooters blame accuracy and say they have a Carbon Ring and there is not one. Sometimes you can have an amount of Copper in your barrel and it will shoot better. If that is all done then move to step #2. 2. Re-Crown your barrel. Take 1/32 off and do a straight crown-no 11-15 degree target crown. You don't need tapered crowns. If your barrel & muzzle are square the gasses will exit evenly with the bullet. I have Re-Crowned Barrels with NO Taper and they shot better than they ever did after 1,500, 2,000 rounds. 3. The next step is that you can move the chamber up, but I can almost guarantee that if you do a good cleaning, then re-crown, you won't have to move the chamber up. Don't throw away a good barrel just because you think it has too many rounds through it.
