I could "say" I like at least 1800 ft pds of energy at the animal, but its just a number I've heard. The farthest I've taken game is right at 400yds, 2 with the same rifle. In Namibia I shot a Gemsbok and a Springbok with a 300WM/180 Barnes/3050fps muzzle, which hit both with 2200 ftpds. I shot a Blackbuck in Texas at 390 with a 115NP/257 Wby/3200 muzzle, no idea how much energy. Shot many more critters from 300-350, with similar rounds, plenty of energy there. Only 4 cow elk out here with an average of 171yds, one of them was shot with a 300 SBT/375 H&H/2600fps muzzle at 200yds. ( I was getting it blooded before same trip to Africa, bullet was too soft, went with 270 Failsafes) So I don't know how much energy is really needed. I do believe in "percentages". I don't shoot anything at any distance unless there is a very high percentage chance of me hitting where I want. But that's me. I don't like chasing after wounded game, small or large.
