For shooting out to max 750 yards would you go 180gr class or 200-212 class bullets
I have the new 180 Berger Elites(using in WSM)and both 200-212 ELD-X on hand.
Helping a friend load and he plans on using CDS turret so want to choose wisely.

I use 212's in mine but his is a lighter rifle so I was also a little concerned about recoil although it has radial break.
Just pondering this so thought I would throw it out there?

The prc Wes's built to handle the heavy for caliber bullets. Depending on the twist it may be best to use the 200-225 class. The 180's May be too light.

I would crunch some numbers of the bullets you are considering. Compare energy, trajectory and wind drift values.

You can read about all the guys who used the 180s before any heavier bullets were available. They didn't seem to have any issues.

And in case that doesn't solve your quest, remember that the the selection of bullets in the 180 class is extremely large so if one bullet doesn't seem to work, there are always others left to test. The numbers in the 200-215 is more limited.

I personally shoot the 215 Bergers after switching from the 180's.:)

In my 300wby I found it doesn't make whole heck of a lot of difference. At 3-400 the 180s have the advantage, past 550 the heavies shine. Depends where the majority of shooting will be

I have a 300WM, and consider the 200-212 class the ideal weight for it (and PRC since they are near enough the same ballistics).

I did a little math, and the 180 gr class seems a little marginal for big animals at 750 yds.

250 yd zero, 5 mph wind, standard atmosphere...

3100 FPS 178 ELDX @ 750 yds
~100" of drop
~17" of wind
~1930 fps
~1480 ftlbs

2900 FPS 212 ELDX @ 750 yds
~105" of drop
~14" of wind
~1980 fps
~1850 ftlbs

As you can see, there's hardly a difference in drop and wind, but the 178 is hitting the "expansion threshold" at 750 yds, and is carrying 25% less energy vs the 212.

Also, the 178 might actually be going a bit too fast for really close shots. Something like an Accubond or Partition would probably be fine at 3000 fps (60-100 yds), but there's a lot of bullets that might grenade at that speed.

Lastly, if you'd ever want to really reach out, there's no question the 210 class pills will sail considerably farther. They pass the 180 class bullets around 625 yds and pull away from there on out.

I shoot tge 181 Hamner our ofva much larger chamber but I don't really air it out enough to need the highest B.C available. Yeah, past 1,000 I'd like the 215 Berger. Inside that 181 at 3500FPS doesn't leave much to be desired.
