I'm trying to decide on the best long range hunting caliber for a short action. Ive been looking at the 7 Sherman Short and 7 SAUM. But im also considering the 7 PRCW. I know most are running 180's on a medium or long action. Based on my calculations, the 7 PRCW would fit a 168 gr. VLD about perfect. But I have not seen anyone post speeds for the lighter bullets, so not sure what I could expect. Any help would be appreciated

I run a short action also for my SS.
It will be more accommodating than the SAUM with a given bullet length, where mag restriction dictates maximum seating depth.
In other words more of the case body will be available for powder, rather than taken up by bullet.

I don't understand the appeal to the wildcats when 7 SAUM has available quality factory brass with no forming and quality dies. Yes the SS can work better in a SA due to the slightly shorter case but if you throat it right it's a non issue. I guess some folks like to be different or reinvent the wheel, but I like **** that just works with the least amount of fuckery involved.

I would pick the SAUM.

Please explain why the 168s are dead.
With the 168s your elk will only be "mostly dead" at 900 yards. The 175s will make them WAAAAY deader.
