What are the best hand/mouth coyote calls?
FWIW, I've decided to delay getting an electronic call B/C I need a chronograph for load development. This fall I plan to get a good electronic call.

I'm pretty good at calling ducks, geese and turkeys. For turkeys I have several mouth and slate calls and one box call. I'm pretty good with mouth calls and have called in several turkeys with them. Slate calls are for "mixing it up" with the box or mouth calls to make it sound like there is a small flock with one or two horny jakes.

All this is to say I can use manual calls fairly well, including a grunt call for deer.
So I think I can learn manual coyote calls as well.

I have called more coyotes with the Tally ho than any other. Burnham Bro.was my first call, a rubber band call, Killed my first yote with it back in the 70s. had several other Burnham bro. too. I have used Johnny Stewart, critter calls, Primos and I have made my own calls. I to, like open reed calls. they all work.

Primos Alpha Dogg is my favorite for calling the coyotes. But if you have enough budget, you can try Foxpro Shockwave, one of my hunting partner Lucas uses it and heard good words about Foxpro from him. Still you can check this list of coyote calls if you want to try something else.

There is nothing wrong with hand calls. I never owned an electronic call until a few years back and called plenty of coyotes. Buy yourself an open reed distress call, closed reed distress, and open reed howler. Some of my favorites are dan Thompson pc-2, verminator thumper, primos hot dog with wood barrel, Hayden's gov. Jackrabbit, and carver rubber rabbit.

I have an old Sceery open read call I bought around 20 years ago. Still use it every time I go out. I bought a Dan Thompson howler a few years back and like it when I want something a little louder or raspier than my Sceery. Have also had good luck with a Critter Call.

The first call I ever used was an old Lohman closed read call that made a rabbit distress if you blew in one end and a mouse squeak if you blew in the other. Worked good in the brush of Arizona where I lived as a kid but doesn't produce enough volume for me where I hunt now in Montana.

I still have and use my dads old Weems wild call from time to time. It has to be sixty years old. I do prefer open reed hand calls they are more versatile.
