285 ELD-M vs cow elk

I am working up loads with 147's this weekend. My 6.5ss has tight 30" Nitrited barrel. Should hit a node around low 3,200fps at around 56.5-57.0 grains rl26

ive got quite a bit of data from 140 ELDM on game, I have found they have limited penetration with heavy elk bone, but still penetrate to the vitals. every one we shot the core separated from the jacket, big deal. they don't go far when shot, real similar to berger, I like these a lot.

140's launched @2725 FPS

That's intersting to hear the 140's work on elk.

I would like to hear how the 147's work on your wife's elk this fall.

Finally got around to finishing cutting up my elk and I struck gold! Or lead :) I recovered the second bullet from the offside front shoulder after it smashed through ribs on both sides and probably 3 feet or so in between. Again perfect reaults with a good mushroom and still held together. These eld m and a max have worked great for me on game from 100 yards to 980. I'm sure there was some meat still stuck in the bullet but this one weighed in at 139.6 grains!

The bullet on the left is the new find.
The first bullet opened to around .6" and second to around .5"

VERY nice!! It is looking more like I will be using them in my 338 Sherman since I was able to reach 2700' today with RL26. I did the numbers and it beats the 250 Berger running at 2800'.......Rich

Glad to hear you were able to stoke those up Rich. I think we both prefer the eld over the berger.

This is good stuff for sure!

I shot yesterday at 603 yards do seating depth test. My best grouping was at .015 off lands and 3,175 fps average. Little slow but think I can squeeze 3,200 fps pretty easy.

My daughter was with me and I saved two bullets after I was done testing. She has not shot a rifle or hunted in seven years. She put 2 shots in the bullseye a 1" apart at 603 yards!

Think I just lost my new 6.5ss. I would post a picture but do not know how too. Oh yea, she beat me too!

Are you guys all running around. 015" off the lands or where are you guys at. I loaded up 15 rounds all the same powder charge and just put the bullet on top to keep things out. I was thinking I would maybe start my usual at .010" off then maybe go to about .030" off and see what happens. I was running the 300 grain elite hunter for pressure testing on some different powders and was at top end 3100 fps, so I am hoping I can get a good tight group with these at around 3075 to 3100. Have you guys compared these to 300 Berger at all in the same gun and gained any velocity or are you pretty much running the same loads with the same outcome?

I can not speak for anyone else just my experience. I start at -.005 and work it into about .030 off lands ( Rich is teaching me ). Look for node and adjust from there.
Yes I have compared to 300 Bergers on game and that is why I am shooting 285 eld's.
Sold all my Berger's, hope they found a good home.
With 285's you should get better velocity. I have done pressure test in my LRKM over 3,200 fps with 104.5 grains Retumbo with cc250's! That's smokin! And yes, Retumbo!

Those are the two nicest looking recovered bullets, love that kind of performance, it reminds me of the Gameking, we'd find a lot of them look just like that under the hide of very dead elk! I loath tipped bullets, not just a little but soul hate them because of meat cutting in my past years but man those are calling to me hard!!!

Ya think buddy!

Here is your 6.5ss you built me @ 603 yards with 147's!

No, after I did my seating depth test I let my daughter shoot the last two.
I need to explain a little. A guy in Montana told me I should try a Wilson seater for consistency seating bullets. I bought a blank seater and borrowed Rich's reamer and machined seater die. Montana guy suggested I seat them all long and take seater to range and seat as I go. When I found good node I had 4 rounds left. My daughter shoot 2 shots and her husband shot 2 shots.
I did not mention her husband's 2 shots because I never approved of him anyway. Now I know why!
Here are are daughters 2 shots.
