    Hunting with Glasses

I'm 80. I've used "duplex" (left eye near, right eye distant) correction for 50 years as suggested by an ophthalmologist when I was flying for a living. Glasses worked so well I went for contacts for 35 years. Now, I've found Lazic surgery even better. No problems with scopes or red dots. I...

    243 or 243 AI

My 243AI built on a Sako 479 action & Douglas 1:10 barrel delivers 85 gr. Sierra HPBT with 46.0 gr. IMR4350 at 3,345 fps into half inch groups if I do my part. The downside of such loads in either 243 Win or 243 AI is short barrel life due to the short necks of both. A recently obtained...

Ok, it's time to see lever action kills

I've long contended trophy animals deserve to be hunted rather than sniped. Accordingly, I've acquired Henry X rifles in 30-30 and 44 Magnum that will be put to work in the field this fall.

My Boys Want a Lever Action

I recently acquired Henry X Models in 44 Magnum and 30--30. Their polymer furniture make them all-weather. Each have soft rubber butt pads coupled with weight to reduce recoil to minimums with heaviest loads. Best of all is the removal of ONE screw allows easy access to the bores for...

.243 Ackley Improved and Reloder 16

The only advice I could find when I began loading for my 243 AI was to begin with max 243 loads and work up. My favorite bullet for rock chucks to wolves is the 85 gr. Sierra HPBT ahead of 46.5 gr IMR4350 providing 3,377 fps with 9 fps SD. No pressure signs on the brass, but bolt lift on the...

Field shooting in hot, dry weather

Eastern Washington is dry as a bone. My range is totally safe, but I'm spending my time cleaning guns and reloading rather than worrying neighbors by shooting.

    What cartridge/bullet for hog hunting?

I've been on one hog hunt. Killed a 275 lb. boar at 125 yards with 140 gr. Nosler Partition from a 6.5-06. He sat down after being hit in the shoulder, then tipped over dead. The meat was inedible even when made into sausage. Avoid shooting big boars if you want meat.

    Anybody using ATVs for hunting?

I've owned a Husqvarna (made by Club Car) UTV powered by a 23 horsepower Kubota diesel engine since 2007. It's not as fast as newer models, but it has amazing low end torque in rough terrain. It's six gallon fuel tank provides a 3 - 4 day range when scouting. A set of Mattracks keeps it going...

    Anybody using ATVs for hunting?

I've used a Husqvarna (made by Club Car) UTV powered by a Kubota 3-cylinder 23 h.p. diesel engine since 2007. It's not as fast as newer models, but has unbelievable low end torque in really rough terrain and a 3-4 day range on six gallons of fuel. A set of Mattracks keeps it going in deep...

    Change my mind

Try 300 WSM in a AR-10 for an ultimate long range "perching" rifle. It's heavy, but recoil is inconsequential. Mine puts 150 gr Fusions into 1/4" moa. Perfect for summertime wolf hunts.

Which is the Cadillac of brass prep centers?

Depend on it, ANYTHING from Dillon will be the best; although the Dillon CP-2000 may be overkill for most of us.

Opinions on optimal magnification for hunting out West

My choice is a vintage 2-7 Leopold. It fits comfortably in a saddle scabbard and doesn't hang up when the rifle is pulled out.

    Federal Fusion

I've shot both 150 & 165 gr Fusions through my 300 WSM AR-10 regularly into groups measuring less than 0.40". They function perfectly, but I've not yet used them on game.
