45-70 Gov. VS .338 MAG VS .300 Mag.

As was pointed out, the site is called longrangehunting.com so the 45-70 probably doesn't fit into that paradigm. I have a few questions for you that might help the folks around here be more helpful to you: Do you want to hunt moose at long range or at typical hunting distances? Do...

Fact or Myth of Moose pushing out Elk?

Here in BC, Canada, we have a ton of overlapping moose and elk ranges. Most of the North-West quarter of the province has a ton of both animals. Elk seem to like climbing mountains a lot more than moose do from what I know.

Vortex PST Model Scopes on Big Magnums

Considering most instructions I've ever cared to read have indicated 20 in/lbs, I'd say that I woudn't be too worried about crushing any tubes until you are well past 15 in/lbs. But scope ring toque values are not on topic what-so-ever. My dad's lightweight 7mm Rem Mag has had the Viper HS...

At long range do you dial, BDC turret, graduated reticle, holdover, etc?

I dial using software on my cell phone, but I will switch over to prepared charts or range cards for hunting due to the amount of rain my locale sees in the fall and winter. Phones are expensive to replace! I'm mostly using software now because I still haven't settled on the exact load yet...

    New at Long Range

I am also pretty new here and to this game in general. I've found this forum to be a termendous source of good information. I'm also shooting a 270 Win in a very inexpensive rifle with what I consider decent results. I don't know if this will be of any help, but there is an article here...

    Minimum Velocity Clarification

You have me there. I cannot explain whether the "mush" is the result of particles radiating out of the fragmenting bullet (what I choose the believe) or if it is the transference of energy to these water-filled, soft tissue organs in hydro-static shock. I've cut away my share of blood-shot...

    Minimum Velocity Clarification

Thanks for digging up some more figures. I was running out of time before I had to leave for work! Bushman, what merit is the dispersion of this energy into the animal vs. the creation of a hole? If you use a bullet like a Berger that explodes inside the vitals, it is not the KE that stops...

    Minimum Velocity Clarification

I want to point out an error in your description of the KE equation. It could be simple semantics but I feel clarity is best. The formula posted is correct, KE = 1/2mv^2 It represents a logical fallacy to say that this is 1/2 of mass times velocity squared. When we do multiplication in a...

    Minimum Velocity Clarification

All my research, experience and intuitive thought mirrors this statement exactly. IMHO, making a hole in an animal is fatal. The bigger the hole, the better. The more vital organs you punch your hole through, the better. I would suggest that momentum would be a better figure to refer...

    bi-pod poll

El' Cheapo Champion 9"-13" swivel bipod for me. It's a blatant knockoff of the Harris S series but considering they are only around $50 CAD it means the difference between having one and not having one at this point. As a guy shooting a Stevens dropped into a Boyd's stock, I represent the...

    Long range scope

I'm pretty sure Jerry Teo is an advocate of the Sightron scopes. I've not had the pleasure of looking through any of them but I'm likely to trust his judgment and experience on more than just optics. Personally, I have a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 and while the reticle is lacking, I'm quite...

Just a nitpick. Thanks for the list!

Accubond LR Comparison and G7 BC Test

Its good to see that this bullet has a respectable BC at least. The terminal performance is a subject I'm very interested in. Does anyone think they will offer any expansion at the 1300fps range that I've seen claimed somewhere? I have a hard time believing it will. I can't wait until some...

What is "neck" on a rifle spec?

I believe it refers to the actual diameter of the chamber where the neck of the cartridge will sit. My understanding is that best accuracy is often from a tight chamber, but "tight" doesn't really mean anything without a reference. Specing a neck size in your rifle allows you to run a...

What kind of equipment do you use in the field?

I haven't been out rock shooting hardly at all yet but I plan to. I'll be taking pretty much the same loadout as below and maybe a bit more useless weight for training purposes. Rifle (Equiped with sling & bipod), ammo, Badlands Superday, binos, wind meter, rangefinder, gps, headlamp...
