My rifle likes to be clean.

FWIW - if your evaluation confirms that your rifle prefers a clean barrel, you might want to try the SmoothKote products. I learned of this product via John Plaster's book. This product (or comparable) entails cleaning the barrel of all fouling, and all solvents, down to bare metal. The...

What should I build in 270 cal ?

+1 for 270 Wby. As with some others, I'm shooting 140gr with a 10 twist. I have two rifles in 270 Wby - a right-handed Ruger (rebarreled at 26", bedded, etc.) and a left-handed Remington KS Mtn rifle (24" barrel). Minimal load development required for each rifle. Good luck with your project.

    Wilderness Pack Specialties Quality/Features

I do not have any definitive info, but it appears that WPS manufactures pack frames for themselves, for the military, and as an OEM supplier for Outdoorsmans.

Best FFP scope for the buck?

If your budget is on the lower end for FFP scopes, fwiw, I put a Vortex Diamondback Tactical FFP 4-16x44 on my young son's 6.5 CM, for approx $350-400. Not a lot of use yet in the field, but no issues so far. It's been a good value, so far, and he's getting an early start on learning to use FFP.

    Wilderness Pack Specialties Quality/Features

fwiw - WPS makes the Yukon plastic frame system used in the Outdoorsmans pack systems, and also the Kodiak plastic frame used in some military packs. fwiw - i bought a military pack system on Ebay - with the Kodiak plastic frame and the suspension and the pack bag (for about $60, if you're a...

    Backcountry stove question

fwiw, consider the temps where and when you'll be hunting. canister stoves often don't work well in the cold (20F or colder). you can improve the performance by (1) keeping the fuel canister in the foot of your sleeping bag at night (and/or you can hold a lighter under the canister in the...

Is there such thing as too much gun for sheep?

fwiw, i've been on three sheep hunts - one NV desert bighorn ewe, and two Dall (N. side of Brooks Range). I used a 270 Wby with 140 Accubonds. 547 yds on my desert bighorn ewe. 350 yds on my Dall. (on the other Dall sheep hunt, the guide only left camp twice in 10 days, while i scouted and...

Barrel break - in ??? What do you do ???

fwiw, Smooth Kote is especially handy if you live in dusty and/or cold climes - because it molecularly bonds with the metal (barrel, bolt, etc.), there is no oil lubrication to trap dust/grit or get sticky in low temps. As Plaster reports i his book, Smooth Kote reportedly proved especially...

Barrel break - in ??? What do you do ???

fwiw, i recommend using Smooth Kote, which is a molybendum disulfate treatment - which entails cleaning the barrel down to bare metal (including using rubbing alcohol to remove any solvent residue), then applying liquid Smooth Kote, letting it dry per instructions, then applying powder Smooth...
