The two areas (aside from wind) that I find most challenging are effective use of an all singing, all dancing ballistics calc (and understanding each component), and load development and consistency. An in-depth understanding of all the factors affecting ballistics and the repeated used of a...
Have you used a wind meter and measured the lateral component, and any gusts? It likely wouldn't account for all your lateral spread, but could be contributing.
If you look at the bullet dimensions, the nose length on the 190VLD/210VLD/215Hyb are .730/.729/.905 (From Berger reloading manual). Given that the nose shape and length are almost identical on the two VLDs (basically the same bullet with a longer bearing surface...boat tail is identical...
Sounds like a great setup you have with the COAL tailored to both the mag and throat. Kind of a shame to mess with it after only 300 rds. I almost went down the same road re-barreling my 300 Win Mag to a 338 Edge but decided to stick with what I have, and buy a new rifle in 338 if I want more...
I think you are confusing barometric and station pressure (and maybe density altitude). It's not the easiest concept to grasp, and I screwed it up for a while until I did some research on it. To get the Kestrel to read and use station pressure accurately (or any other ballistics software), you...
Interesting. The only two calibres and powders I've worked with a lot up here are Varget in 308 and H4831SC in 300 Win Mag. I've always been a little leary of my velocities as I didn't trust my chrony that much, but my results have been fairly consistent. I just rxd the Magneto Speed and am...
All right, I got un-lazy and ran the numbers. The change in POI at 300m shooting a 215 Berger at 3000 fps at a temp of 70F and shooting the same bullet at 2900 fps at 40F is approx 2 in. This takes into account both the drop of approx 100 fps in muzzle vel due to the change in temp, and the...
I shoot in the Arctic at temps varying from -30 to 80 deg F, so have dealt with temp variation quite a bit, and how it affects the muzzle vel. A general rule of thumb (it has worked fairly well for my shooting) is a change of 3 fps for every degree of change. All depends on powder type etc...
Excellent post and discussion. I use a Leica 1600 that gives me declination and plug it into a ballistics calculator. Dial both elevation and windage. Follow on shots are generally hold off once I see the impact.
Great shot, story and discussion. Lot to be said for intuitive scopes/reticles for these types of shots. A Simple graduated reticle and target perspective allows a person to adjust follow on shots on the fly. I prefer an FFP scope as it adds a quantitative element to a person's intuitive...
Great pics. Love the detail on the rifle stock. Who says a rifle can't be businesslike and look good at the same time? Very well kitted out with field equipment. Like the gators and boots combo. What pack is that?
