Bone to pick with new rifle owners - 100 yards out of the box

I've never taken a rifle hunting which I haven't first shot to ensure it'll hit where aimed at the ranges expected. Heck, I even regularly check the suppressed .22rf I use on rabbits, never mind the .270

Practice Rifle .223 or 6.5 creedmoor

IMO it does, which is why I run four Schultz & Larsen Victory rifles from 22-250 to .375 Ruger. Same length of pull, same cheek weld, same controls, so muscle memory eliminates hesitancy.

    What about .270 Winchester?

One caveat regarding .270 with the usual 1:10 rifling. It will NOT stabilise monolithic copper or other non lead bullets of 150gr or greater. I wasted time & money on trying to get Barnes & a European manufacturers' 150gr offerings to shoot & they don't, period. You need 1:8 & that in turn...

    What about .270 Winchester?

It depends... IF you have the brass for your foreseeable needs of whatever takes your fancy & the bullet dimensions aren't exotic, then the world's yer oyster. Me? I went 22-250, .243, .270 & .375 Ruger in regard to hunting rifles. For 'social' occasions, I'm 100% with 5.56 & 7.62 Nato. ;)

Doubting what I saw at the LGS

Grabbing hold of someone whilst touching a fence & wearing wellingtons (galoshes) is amusing. 😁

Doubting what I saw at the LGS

Standard 5.56 ball @ 100yds vs 2 pieces of ¼" steel plate welded together. Non penetrating hits were cheap Russian stuff - definitely underpowered.:

    Your SHTF mandatory gun list.

If I'm in the US when it goes Wahoonie shaped: .22LR rifle & pistol. Browning Hi Power in 9mm .38/.357 Ruger GP100 with 6" barrel AR15 O/U 12ga L1A1/FAL If I'm in the UK, then everything that's in my gun safe (all bolt guns & 12ga) until I relieve someone of a handgun.

    One Gun?

Dispose of the wife.;) As for one rifle for pretty much anything; I'll go with my Schultz & Larsen in .270 Win. I've handloads with bullets from 90-150gr, which covers anything from roe to elk. Of course having only one rifle strikes me as odd, even here in the UK...

    Are you ready?

I guess I was considered a tad "obsessive" here in the UK until recently, with my ensuring I had 3 month's food stored seen as amusing. Nobody is laughing now, as the subhuman vultures are stripping the stores on a daily basis. I've enough ammunition, or the components thereof, to see me through...

What Got Everbody Started Reloading ?

I recently bought a new, Schultz & Larsen Victory in 22-250 & the next day I picked up 17 boxes of different bullets, from 45-65gr. Family stuff has precluded shooting any of the 10 x 25 rounds I've prepared so far but it'll come. :-)

What Got Everbody Started Reloading ?

It's reached the point for me these days where I'm constantly looking for new loads to develop, as I enjoy the process of making the ammunition itself almost as much as shooting it.

    .270 Win Factory Ammunition OAL

Anyone else able to help? So far, none of the measurements I've been given have come within 0.010" of concerning me. TIA

What Got Everbody Started Reloading ?

Cost of cheap .38spl ammo: $0.19 a round if you're OK with steel cased stuff, $0.24 if you want brass. Cost of reloads using bullets cast from range lead $0.06 including the gas to melt the lead, or $0,13 if I buy the bullets. That's at least $6 a range visit less on .38spl alone, then there's...

A short throat has its advantages.

    .270 Win Factory Ammunition OAL

Both COAL & CBTO with the latter using the Hornady gauge. I'm about to start loading for a new rifle & It has a short throat. This wouldn't bother me were I only ever doing to use my own handloads but it's going back if most factory ammunition wont chamber without pushing the bullet back.
