    30-06 question

That is very cool! What I wouldn't give to sit and talk with German for a couple hours and pick his brain for ideas. He's the 30-06 guru for sure. But like you mentioned, he's also proficient and accurate with a number of calibers.

    Idahoans sound off.

Idaho born and raised, living near Rexburg. The deer hunt this year was pretty poor. I saw more wolf tracks than I did deer. My son had the same experience on the two days he hunted the desert alone. Glad to see so many Idahoans on here!

New Member looking to get into the sport

Welcome A04Goat! I disagree about the 300 win mag being a good choice for a guy whose got little experience with rifles, and none to speak of in the past 15 years. That caliber can, and does, bring 200 lb grown men to tears. Adding a muzzle break will reduce the felt recoil, but there are...

    30-06 question

Welcome COWBOYBUCK! Try not to get lost in all the banter your post generated :D. To answer your question, the 30-06 is an excellent caliber for LR hunting, target shooting, and having fun. I have a Savage 110 in 30-06 that has a 1:10 twist and will shoot anything from 150 grain to 240 grain...

    New guy

Welcome Sean223! You're right regarding the 60 grain 223 round for your Howa 1500. The 1:12 twist rate for a 223 won't stabilize rounds above 62 grains, and really does best for rounds from 40-55 grains, with the good ol' 55 grain being the optimal for that twist rate. That said, depending on...

    recoil problem....

I resoundingly agree! Once you shoot a 7mm-08 you'll never want to shoot anything else. On the fun scale it's through the roof. On the accuracy scale, it's also through the roof! My 12 year old daughter that weighs 80 pounds can shoot this caliber all day long. And it EASILY matches the big boys...

    recoil problem....

Excellent suggestions on a number of calibers! +1 on the 243, the 7mm, the 264, and the 6.5's. All are excellent choices with very little recoil from out of the box. Since the objective here is to minimize recoil AND increase your long range capabilities, one caliber stands out above all...

    All-around gun/caliber for Texas?

I want to purchase or build a general purpose all-around hunting rifle for under $1k to use for: - Hunting everything under the Sun in Texas. This means everything from Whitetail deer to Mule deer to Pronghorns to Hogs to Black Buck to Coyotes to Alligators. - I want a gun that is light...

    Newbie Questions

There have been some really good comments offered here. I'll add a couple of things from my own experience. Without going into detail, you would be really well-served to do some research on barrel harmonics and action stabilization. It's pretty common for folks who don't understand internal...

    MARKSMANSHIP BASICS - Sight Picture

1 - I hold as long as necessary to make an accurate shot. No use wasting lead downrange because I hurried the trigger pull. At the same time, I train to reduce my "on target to trigger pull" time to under 5 seconds. I simply want to be as quick to make the accurate shot as possible. But I don't...

    MARKSMANSHIP BASICS - Practice

#1 Describe your practice preparation prior to a long range hunt. I practice year-round in all kinds of weather and in the type of terrain I generally hunt. Practice includes taking shots from known and unknown distance to practice calculating dope and placing first-round hits. #2 Do you...

    MARKSMANSHIP BASICS - Breathing

Topic #1: My optimal breathing control pattern during the actual firing of a shot consists of preparing to take the shot at the bottom of my exhalation (breathing out). I breath calmly and consistently for a couple of breaths and then intend to take the shot at the bottom of my third breath -...

    Never use a SAFETY

I agree with Topgun 30-06 on this. I carry empty and even when I've jumped game I've had better than 50% success getting a kill shot after taking the time to chamber a round. I used to work in our local hospital ER and saw a number of "accidents" where friends and family shot each other thinking...
