I would get a large piece of cardboard for a rangefinder target and then do the distance in increments. You can use cosine distances to compensate for up and down if you have to walk or use the ATV. You can use onX or any GPS to keep a straight line. Two methods would be good.
Maybe some of you should use full metal jacket, you get all the velocity and guaranteed pass through. Pass through and better chance of a good blood trail is very important... in archery.
As noted above, conditions and personal tolerance are key. My approach is to maintain mobility by wearing lighter clothes including footwear. I use normal summer hiking shoes as long as it is above zero F. The secret is to keep the rest of the body warm. Multi layer fleece and gortex jacket on...
This is a non-usesful anecdote swithout caliber, cartridge, load and what was going on at the time. As is, we just have an admonition to be careful; got it.
Here is another implausible explanation:
You have increased gravity at the elk camp; I have often thought that I noticed it, but you are the fifrst with proof. You have either messed with the time/space continuum or there is a massive, high density deposit beneath your camp. Maybe a metal...
I have found that tech, as I use it, is quite useful as a learning tool. If you feel a measured 10 mph wind enough times, you can get to know what 10mph feels like.
I have read and am carefully considering all of the above. I have killed 40 elk, 10 of them with a bow. Only 3 of those were beyond 300 yards and they were one shot kills. With your help, I will keep it that way. Thanks to all.
Jim
Thanks; I have never run across that idea, but it makes sense. It has always seemed that the cosine rule is a bit too simple when you consider the changing quantities in bullet flight.
I know of a great park where elk appear before dark. Like many such places the convexity of the open area makes it unlikely to see elk when on the ground there. I found a cliff vantage point that would offer shots from 250 to about 600 yards. The downslope is 21 to 26 degrees. For me, the...
Two years ago, I went to South Africa for a hunt. I took a "cheap gun," a Weatherby Vanguard II. It has some annoying characteristics of a cheap gun, but the .30-06 cartridge performed well on African plains game. My son also used .30-06. We found out that it is the most common rifle taken to...
If you are on a horse when griz shows up, try not to scare the bear or the horse. If on the ground, use bear spray; certainly, that is the consensus nowadays. Your rifle can be a good backup, but everybody around here relies on bear spray.
