    Recommend Me A Lightweight Rifle

I love light rifles for western hunting at altitude. I am also getting older and I am still a flat lander, but light rifles can be tricky when it comes to accuracy. Someone wrote Tikka rifles. I would second that since I have never had a bad one. As for cartridge selection I don't think you...

    Best hand priming tool

I have been reading some of the other responses and all of them are good. One other thought I had was that the need for a "best hand priming tool" would not be necessary if the loading press had a good priming setup. I recommend Lee products (but not all of them), because their price point is...

    Best hand priming tool

I also like the Lee. They are so inexpensive you can get several for each loading need. I have always carried a portable loading set at Perry or when hunting out West just in case. Lee's hand press, powder measure and scale, etc could be carried in a small box.

How to Determine Your Effective Range for a Hunting Shot

Jrock, question gets to the heart of the issue based on one parameter, the basic accuracy of the rifle/ammo combo. As everyone on this site probably agrees, there are a lot more factors involved in LR shooting. When I got into the competitive shooting game in the Navy, I was amazed at how far...

My 100lb plan for 2016 elk hunt

I am no expert on exercise programs, but it seems you are over doing it on the weight lifting programs. You need to drop carbs in your food intake, and do more duration climbing and descending. Any steps, hills, climbing over fallen logs, rocks, etc. Last hunt I did was in a burn area six year...

How to Determine Your Effective Range for a Hunting Shot

Good article, but the question still remains. With equipment developing so fast this issue is going to be a never ending issue. I remember something which Richard Lee, of Lee Precision the reloading manufacturer in Hartford WI, once said: " even if you make the best equipment possible, remember...

    Dangerous Game Rifle Recommendations?

A number of years ago I saw an article in the Rifleman about a Remington 760 in 35 Whelen used for Elk hunting. This round was developed by Whelen by sizing up the neck of the 30-06 to 35 cal. The shoulder is on the smallish side with reports by some, especially when shot in the Encore, to have...

    Dangerous Game Rifle Recommendations?

OK, I was a bit flippant pent on my first response, but considering that the question was asked in good faith let me reply likewise. There is no perfect stopping rifle. Big is better to a point, but that point is reached when the rifle gets too big and heavy, kicks too much or is not suitable...

My 100lb plan for 2016 elk hunt

Be careful no to over do your exercise plan. An injury can put you on the side lines for the hunt. One other thought. I have done several western trips into the mountains. If you can get vacation time, try and get a week or more off before the hunt and walk trails in the same type of area...

    Dangerous Game Rifle Recommendations?

There were so many contradictory requirements for your stopping rifle I doubt any suggestion would satisfy you. Big is not always best. If it was a 50 cal machine gun mounted on a Humvee with a tank as a back up would probably work. I have also noticed that many hunters who can afford dangerous...

Savage Long Range Hunter Rifle Review

Right on! While I have several heavy .260's I now have own a very light and not particularly accurate Remington Model 7 for deer or just carrying around in the car, but for that it is just fine.

Savage Long Range Hunter Rifle Review

I like the 260 and use it for across the course and long range, but have concerns about using it for long range. With 140 gr bullets, at about 500 yds, it drops below one thousand foot lbs of energy. That is like using a 30-30 at 200 yds.! If you are going to carry a 10lbs rifle up a mountain...

    What's your elk rifle?

I can't help notice a lot of you like some heavy weight cartridge, but for me the best elk gun is the one I have in my hand when I see an elk. Usually a 30-06 or 270.

    Choosing a crossbow?

I have tended to like light and short crossbows. Most crossbows are rather muzzle heavy and while this is not a problem in a blind, it will not take long for you to wish you had a lighter crossbows when carrying it. Another issue is complexity. The more complex the harder to fix in the field...
