I tested .30, .338, .375, .416, and .458 brakes on a 300wm. There is no difference until you get to .416 and it only a slight reduction in performance. The .458 dropped a good deal of performance though.
My hunting buddy runs a Kuiu and I run a Kifaru frame with a Exo bag. The Kifaru hip belt is easier on my hips. Since a have a rather flat butt my hips basically take all of the load. I hauled out a boned out elk hind quater and 1 1/2 boned out front quarters along with some stuff in my pack...
My ported brakes have smaller top holes then most brake to try and reduce downward thrust. The only real way to reduce muzzle rise without causing too much downward thrust is threaded and plugged top holes. That way you only use the minimum amount of down thrust to spot shots. I'm working on a...
6.5-300wm's shoot 140's about 3300fps in non RWS brass with Retumbo. In RWS brass I use to shoot 3265fps. I think I hit 3350 with N-570 but it's been a few years since I messed with it. I killed 4-5 elk with it and a deer at 1023yds and then went back to shooting .30's. The 6.5x68 Imp is almost...
I'm surprised they want 16 weeks for a regrind. Usually it's a couple weeks unless they are out of 300wm reamers. Why not do a 25-300PRC or 25-26 Nosler? The 25-26 Nosler would be within a few grains of a 257STW and a 25-300PRC would be similar to a 25-300wm without the belt. The 25-26 Nosler...
One of my dad's was just under 500, 496 if I remember right. My kids bull was 200 last year. I'd be more worried about close rather then far. The old 140 Amax's are tougher then the 147 ELD-M'S. I'm not sure how the ELD-M version of those are but I killed several elk with those and a deer at...
My dad has killed 5 or so cow elk with 147's from his 6.5CM doing 2850fps and my kid killed a nice bull with 147's from his 6.5x47L doing 2725fps. I'm converting my kids to 6.5PRC in the next month and I just built my dad a 6.5 PRC. Both will shoot 147's if they shoot tiny groups like they do now.
