    Leupold VX 3i 8.5-25X50- 1st or 2nd focal plane.

Here's my take: if you NEED to range using the mil dots or bars then a FFP is handy. However the reticle will be very fine at low magnification for those close snap shots when it should be thick. At high magnification it will be thick and cover half the damm target. So I would maybe want FFP...

Will your next rifle scope be MOA or MIL? **OLD POLL**

Mils every time. Just too hard to remember the MOA figures. 10cm at 100m is easy. Besides my country is all in metric.

    Night Vision

Yes I used (tried to use one) in New Zealand last month deer hunting. I was impressed by the fact that no light or illuminator was required but totally underwhelmed by the constant fiddling needed to get it to work and focus. We were stalking at night so not really an ideal way to test it out.

    Best holdover reticle of varmints?

I'll add that I have a Zeiss SFP scope that has a BDC and will only work at 1 power setting and that is dictated by the type of projectile and it's caliber and it's velocity at the muzzle. The BDC would not be correct at the same power setting if I used a heavier bullet with different BC and a...

    Best holdover reticle of varmints?

Just a question; as the size and dimensions of the reticle in a FFP scope do not change in relation to the target, will the bullet drop hashes work for all loads and calibers? If they do then a FFP with BDC would be fine I guess.

To hold or not to hold

It still boils down to what works for you. Either way can be made to work. This is a long range forum what kind of rifle are we looking at? How much does it weigh? If the recoil is an issue and adding weight, a muzzle brake or better still a moderator are not options then pulling it in hard and...

    22-250 projectile size

There are no laws that dictate the weights of bullets in Australia. In the UK, Europe and USA there are laws that dictate the caliber and Wt of projectiles used to take different game. Here there are no such rules. We do not have 'game' animals as such. Just feral and native. Unprotected and...

How the hell did use get a .338

In Europe some rifle manufacturers are making quick barrel change rifles (eye wateringly expensive) because in some countries there is a limit on the number of rifles a person can own. I am currently making a swap barrel rifle in .223 Rem and 6.5x55 Swede. This has the advantage of only...

How the hell did use get a .338

WA requires a shooter to justify the rifle being applied for. Each and every rifle has to be licensed separately. Each application can have more than one rifle/gun on it but they all have to have a justification letter. Also the cops will ask for a property letter each and every bloody time we...

    Best misses

    1. Out spotlighting with friends with a recently purchased Savage 99 in .243Win, 5 rounds in the rotary mag. Saw a roo, cocked it muzzle up and as the lever reached the last 1/8" it went off, frightening the bejeezus out of all of us. The previous owner had filed the trigger sear down to the...

To hold or not to hold

My army instructor (sniper/marksman school) always insisted we hold that fore-end and pull it in tight. He'd go off the deep end if we curled the left arm back to support the right forearm. The idea is to keep muzzle jump down and consistent shot to shot. It takes more discipline to maintain...

    Scope for 1000+

Having held a Vortex 6.5 -24 in hand and owning a Zeiss 6.5-20 Conquest, I'd buy the Zeiss again. The Vortex is just too heavy and gives insufficient technical advantage over the Zeiss. Clarity and field of view goes to the Zeiss. gun) Just had a look at the specs for the new HD 5-25 Zeiss, it...
