    Hunter needs a new barrel.

I can’t ask for more than that. I’ll be contacting the manufacturer within the next few months (it’s hunting season). This will probably get me kicked off of here, but since it’s been asked I’ll elaborate somewhat and keep it to what I did and what I used. I will not mention my results. To...

    Hunter needs a new barrel.

No, I’ve never spoken to them. Never wanted to pay for all new threading, chambering, crowning, and Cerakoting but am also very tired of putting 100 trial loads through the rifle before a hunt to try to find a suitable load and then end up taking my sons rifle or some other rifle because it’s...

    Hunter needs a new barrel.

Hate my Bartlein barrel. I’ll by happy to edit this post if they provide me a replacement for a reasonable price. Erratic velocities and terrible accuracy. Hate this barrel. I would go with Hart or Krieger or air gauge Douglas before waisting money with Bartlein again. Terrible. +\- 50...

    Scope ring height

Yep, lows. Especially since you’re using a rail.

Best 7mm bullet out to 600 yds

150 Swift Scirocco II. Good BC, plenty of velocity, they mushroom well at long range and hold up well at short range.

Just got the reloading bug...need help in deciding

Hey! If you want to recover your reloading costs faster, start shooting lots of 300 or 340 Weatherby shells. You’ll recover your costs within the first few boxes of ammo! I guess I should have added the caveat that if you’re loading 300 Rum or 338 Lapua ammo, the Rock Chucker press is a bit...

Yep, you’ll also need a trimmer and a dial caliper. It’s always something

Just got the reloading bug...need help in deciding

Yep. Rock Chucker. The kit has pretty much everything you’ll need to get started except dies. I’ve been rocking a Rockchucker for over 30 years and produce everything from 300 RUMs to 9mms with it. I’ve upgraded everything from the kit over time except the press. I have no idea about...

300 win mag vs 7mm rm

I think the difference is that with a 7mmRM I can comfortably shoot 160 to 168gr bullets that have pretty good BCs without a muzzle break. Once you’re into 180s, I must agree that a 7mmRM is getting pretty punishing, arguably close to a 300WM with 180s. The difference is that the 7mm 180 has...

I would mix that up every time. Not for me but cool in its own way.

300 win mag vs 7mm rm

It’s the first 7mmRM I’ve ever fooled with with a twist faster than 1:9. It’s a full 26” but slower than any other 7mmRM I’ve ever heard of. That’s why I blamed the twist. What other factors are you referring to? Factors that I can do something about or factors like, “it’s actually a 270...

300 win mag vs 7mm rm

I agree. If I saw any benefit to shooting a 300WM compared to a 7mmRM, that’s what I would shoot regardless of the extra recoil but after watching 30 or 40 elk get shot over the past 15 years or so by myself, friends and relatives with 7mmRMs, 300WMs, 300 Wbys, and 338 Wins and seeing no...

300 win mag vs 7mm rm

My 1:8.5 twist Bartlein is 200 fps slower than my 1:9 twist Hart. Is it common to lose that much velocity for a little more twist?

300 win mag vs 7mm rm

I vote 7mm Remington. 1:9 twist, even 1:9.25 or 1:9.5 is all the twist you need to stabilize effective elk bullets. My group hunts with 7mmRMs, 300 WMs, and 338WMs for elk. None of them provide consistent bang-flops but all kill elk.

Do larger calibers really compensate for bad shots?

I have one antidotal story to contribute to this discussion regarding distance, bullet weight and caliber and knowledge and opportunity. In the late 1980’s (pre-godforsaken wolves) elk were very plentiful in North Idaho but shot opportunities were not. If you’ve never been there just allow me...
