I've been hearing that ground hawgs are hard to find these days in any numbers. I've been lucky to secure a couple dozen feilds that have yeilded some great shooting so far this year. We're up to 50+ in the last couple weeks (3 trips) using a 220 Swift VSSF, 243 WSSM Browning Varmint Stalker...
Hold your horses there fellas! I had the same issue with my Remington 700 S/S in 300 RUM. Ripped that tupperware stock off it and got a HS Precision stock on it with a longer LOP and went to a Leupold VXIII from a Bushnell 3200 for the eye relief and now its no problem to shoot. Do yourself...
@ 92 grains of retumbo and a 200 grain accu bond I'm pushing 3200 fps....when I increased over 92 grains the speed started to fall off. I'd imagine your close to the 3200 fps mark! I too use the 26" tube.
Great shooting!
Thanks for your insight guys! I've been using Winchester large rifle primers so far, but was wondering if the magnum would be more suited for the Retumbo. I'm gonna switch over to the Federal 215M and see what happens
I've packed 85 grains of retumbo and the 200 AB for 3006 fps and well under MOA. Is 94 grains considered over max load? Will be doing some loading this weekend and would like to get the volocity up, but not loose the accuracy. What barrel lengths are you fellas running?
Okay, Ackleyguy....
Lets here what your position is on moly coated bullets for the RUM. You've certainly slammed my post so let's here the factual back up from you! Moly acts as a bullet / barrel lubricant and reduces presure resulting in slower volocity from the muzzle....your telling...
The comment on moly is simply that it provides greater lubrication for the bullet as it passes out through the barrel. The copper jackets provide increased presure over the moly coated bullets and generate more volocity with the same amount of powder. My 300 RUM shows no presure signs at all...
I think that more important than scope magnification is the importance of estimating range and having experience with the gun. The 7mm STW is a very flat shooter and you will likely have a 300 yard effective zero for minute of elk. As mentioned earlier, I'd get that rifle in for a serious...
Glass bedding is when they take a epoxy compound like acra glass and spead and area around where the receiver fits into the stock. This ensures a 100% proper fit and eliminates any movement and receiver torquing. This one of the #1 things to do to ensure accuracy.
The trigger job shouldn't...
First off with that LSS I'd get it glass bedded. Second have the trigger pull weight dropped down to about 3 lbs by a gun smith. Third thing I'd do is ensure you've got quality mounts on it to stand up to recoil.
That done...I'd start looking for a Nosler Accu Bond load in either 180 grain or...
My accuracy load with the 200 grain Accu Bond is:
84.5 grains of Retumbo
Winchester Mag rifle primer
bullet seated to the recommended COL (3.75 I think)
I get 3000 FPS about 3 ft from muzzle
and completely penetrate 1/2" steel @ 100 yards.
I primarily will use this load to hunt moose in...
