My friend says he shot a buck from 200 yards and he thinks its long range.Tell me what you think.
Tell him I'm in Alabama where most people are proud of 100 yard shots (not me, of course, I know my skill level). Sounds like a routine day in the woods for me. Popped 2 deer this year, one was 150, the other was nearing 200 yards. Cake walk shots. The one at 150 didn't move...Dropped dead instantly with a pumphouse shot. The one around 200 ran about 20 yards into the woods with a perfect double-lung & heart shot at about a 30* angle. Those are typical shots for me when I go hunting, because I strategically go to the longest green fields or powerlines where nobody else hunts because they all think anthing past 150 yards is "a long shot". :D

Long range is any time you must compensate for altitude, angle, temperature, wind or other factor such as inability to hold the gun study due to fatigue, cold, excitement, pride, fear, anger or a host of other emotions that cause you or your target to move! The weapon also plays in to the equation, a 25 yard shot with a BB gun is long range.

Word!

gun)

5280ft/3=1760yds=1 statute mile.

so

440 yards is 1/4 mile. That's not THAT far.

880 yards makes the half mile mark. That's far.

I rounded up from the choices and said 1,000 yards is long distance.

I bet many of us on here have shot over a quarter mile distances. Some maybe didn't even realize it.

I think anything past 500 yards is when factors come into play.
Most loads I shoot will have a max point blank (no hold over required) approaching or exceeding 400 yards so for me "long range" has to be something more than that.

On deer and larger game 600.

Priarie dogs are a real challenge at 400, so are rabbits.

The challenge grows exponentially with the range from beyond those ranges if there is any wind at all.

It also depends a great deal on what you are shooting firearms and caliber wise.

200yds is a hell of a poke with an open sight pistol for example.

This is the LRH forum. For the most part 400yds doesn't approach LR for most of what we are shooting and I think, no, I'm pretty sure most of us know that.
