.243 vs 6.5x284

What do you want to use it for? Shooting steel? Coyotes? Paper? Deer? Elk? Bigfoot? Unicorns?

6.5-284 gets my vote. More pop than .243, heavier & higher BC bullets, 1K yard hunting capabilities, and it's ballistically superior to the .243.

Don't get me wrong, .243 in a great round, but I wouldn't shoot at a deer more than 500 yards away with one. Lots of folks have shot deer out to 1K with a 6.5-284.

I like both cartridges but the 6.5x284 has better long range ballistics, comparable felt recoil, more killing power on game, and overall, better versatility whether for targets or hunting. iMO.

It would be possible to re barrel from 243 to 6.5x284 but not re chamber, the bore diameters are different. Also, for your uses, go 6.5x284 without a doubt. Buuuuuttt may i suggest a 284 win?

Personally, I would sell the M77 and buy a used Vanguard or Howa. M77's have issues, not the least of which is the angled front action screw. There a lot of Tang Safety M77 fans out there, it shouldn't be hard to sell.

Both are great cartridges, my vote goes to the 6.5x284.

+1, also consider the plain jane rem 700 or savage 110 (make sure you get a long action).

The 6.5x284 uses the same bolt face as the 243, but, a long action is needed to take full advantage of the 6.5x284.
