26” 270 rifle for mule deer

The rifle/cartridge is more capable than I am!

I max out at 600….if you're a believer in energy for kill effectiveness, it's still above 1600 ft/lbs @ 1200 yards! 😉 memtb
I think if I was just getting back into this. I would be more concerned with trigger time than a few inches. I don't think I would be going for long shots w/out the proper time spent w/ the rifle & scope. Seeing how he's shooting further than irons allow.

I didn't think you were of such a mindset. I don't like things on the end of my barrels either and don't care for 26" barrels.

I'm afraid so! Never let anyone know that we think alike…..you'll not make many friends that way! 😉

However, that's not entirely true, I always keep my barrel tapped, and there's a front sight on top……a sight that I hope that I never need!! 😉 memtb

An update - wont leave you folks (especially JJMP) hanging. First off my iron-sighted 30-06 is now my son's - 2000 miles away so I'm starting fresh. If I still had it I do like some of your ideas on building off that 7400.
I read the first three pages of comments to my original post this AM and they got me off the 26" barrel track. Started poking around on-line for .270's in 24" and discovered a CZ 600 American in 24"/270 for a good price at XudsGunshop.com (the x replaces another letter of the alphabet in case LRH has rules about advertising). Plus CZ has a rebate for same that ends last day of the year.
So I ordered one and will wait a week or so for the check to clear and shipping. Will be interesting to have a first-year edition of a new product-hope it turns out. I decided to take a chance just because my wife has about 4000 rounds thru her CZ-75 handgun and loves it. Hopefully the CZ handgun reliability translates to rifles as well
I am now following your advice and looking into range finders, scopes (i'm discovering interesting things like first vs second optical plane, BDC reticles vs CDS knobs etc). Also will order a set of dies for my Rockchucker and add .270 to my hand loading capabilitiies.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and the advice. Of the forums I've joined this is right up there. Maybe neck and neck with the S&W forum IMHO….I do like old revolvers.

Happy new years and good luck in the field in 2024.

Or sage the money in a new rifle put a swfa scope and take the rest of the money you saved and spend time or shooting in different positions, off back packs/shooting sticks, tripod, bipod, shoot in the wind find a place to shoot 3-500 yards. Learn what wind does to your rifle. By no means am I am 06 fan but I'd rather have someone who knows their rifle inside and out that have some one buy a new rifle and not know what/how to shoot at 300 yards in a 15-18 mph wind
With the right bullet your '06 will outperform the 270

A 280 ackley with a 24 inch barrel. Will duplicate a 270 with a 26 inch. I own a 280 ackley and it duplicates the 270, but comes within a mere 100fps when compared to the 7mm rem mag, with comparable bullet weights.

My 270s seem to blow the groups at peak pressures, -150 fps+ of my 280 AIs. I would love to hear those 270 loads, I hope to never quit learning.

My 270 loads-22"
150's at 2800-56g
140's at 2900-58g
130s at 3000-60g
H4831-cci 250s

Those velocities are rounded off. I have read of much higher velocities, but I am looking for accuracy. I am sure that other powders are where the higher velocities are, but I am just not familiar with them. I tried Mag Pro with some good speed, but large groups. I try for 1/2" or better.

He tells me if he had to start out fresh he'd recommend first a 25-06, and second choice 270. BUT only with a 26-inch barrel. In my price range (say 800-1200) I dont see anything in 25-06, and only two in .270 with 26" barrel options: Browning X bolt speed LR and the Remington 700 Long Range.
Am I missing other options? If not which would be your choice.
Your friend has advice worth taking. Between those two Id pick the 25-06, hands down makes a great deer and antelope rifle out to 500yds. The 270 is good and is a bit more power (a nod should you ever consider an elk hunt). I wouldn't go less than a 24in barrel in either caliber, 26in would be better if you handload and want to max out some velocity potential, factory ammo really wont make a difference in velocity over 24in. I would pick the Browning xbolt, but also consider a Savage I hear is making great accurate rifles these days for less.

Edit: I just saw after I posted (not certain how I missed it....) you just purchased a CZ 600 American in 24"/270. Excellent choice and caliber and will serve you well for anything you can hunt in the states.
