Len,

It completely depends upon the chambering/quarry and terrain. Since the higher power is rarely much more than 4 times the lower power, and I like having the ability for a low power of around 4x, that limits me to around 16x on the high side. I occasionally would lke a touch more, but not often for big game.

Also, for some reason, I'm not allowed to vote in this poll.

My upper limit is actually more set by my lower limit. The NSX 5.5 -22 is ideal. If it was 2.5 -40 it would be even better. But, I won't go with an 8-32 per se to get more magnification, because I need the lower end also.

20 - 22 is plenty on top. But, more wouldn't hurt.
4-6 is as high as I want on the bottom.

Len: it's June 29th, 9:55pm eastern time. Can't vote on the poll.

While it might be nice to have a higher magnification, I have a fixed 10x on one of my rifles and do just fine with it out to 1k. jmason can attest to this. As I recall, the Marine Corp at one time used fix 10x on their sniper rifles.

Although I've probably had my longest string of PD hits with 12X-14X, I like the availabiity of higher magnification not particularly for shooting, but for evaluating individual targets...it's more difficult to see bullet strikes using the higher powers.

FWIW, from my reading on the Net, it looks like the scope most lusted after by serious highpower rifle competitors is the Schmidt & Bender 5-25X...wish I could afford one. :D

For the purposes of what I consider this site to be geared toward I would say between 20-25X. However, every rifle I have has a purpose and the magnification of the scope reflects that. I wouldn't put a 6.5-20X on a heavy rifle that I intended to take to africa for instance. Likewise I wouldn't put a straight 4 power on a long range or benchrest rig. I've also done some super long range shooting with a buddy of mine that 25X isn't enough. If you're shooting at 2+ miles I'd want something boosted to 50X or more.
