$100K 1/2 MOA rifle?

I've shot some pretty respectable 3 shot groups (1 1/2 - 1 1/2") @ 300 yards. with my "hunting" rifle….but, wouldn't make a bet on repeating it very often!

My hunting rifle…….9 pounds, scoped, loaded, slung, 4.5-10 scope, no "weed burner", cartridge is a "wee bit" larger than your 6.5 mm minimum. I set my personal limit on shooting game at 600 yards. Any heavier than 10#…..it's not gonna quality as a hunting rifle for me! memtb

Yeah I threw in "hunting" rifles to eliminate the 20 pound, small cartridge rifles and stuff haha. I was thinking 12lb max, elk killer type cartridges.
When I thinking "hunting" my mind immediately goes to a gun capable of killing an elk. I should have been more specific to begin with.
Ah, but some of us kill elk using those lowly creedmoors despite the sentiment here that bullets bounce off elk unless shot from magnums. ;)

But no worry, not relevant for this conversation since mine shoots 10 shots into .8-1.1ish depending on the load. Sure, I could cherry pick 3 or 5 into sub .5 but I sure won't take your bet for on-demand.

The reason I thought of this thread was because I was loading 195 Berger's for a buddy's 8lb 28 Nosler and he seemed a little disappointed that it wouldn't consistently hold small groups. I told him it's about 1 MOA platform. I said it's either easy to carry, or easy to shoot. Pick better next time 🤣. But there is a lot of unreal expectations out there. Like fierce showing a factory .4" 3 shot group to go with some of their rifles. But when my dad got his fierce rifle, it wouldn't even chamber a piece of brass. Wonder how they got that group???? 😅😅😅😅. Or the 300 PRC gunwerks I'm shooting that kicks like a **** mule and can barely hold a 5 shot 1 MOA group. I'd love to see them lay down a 10 shot .7" group with it lol.

But I totally bought into all that crap when I first started shooting also.
Its interesting. I'm at the same point as you where I'm loading for buddies with really light magnums and I much prefer a heavier gun with lighter recoil, even for my backpack hunting. What's also interesting is watching some of these guys shoot. They buy a lightweight hunting rifle in XXX magnum, with an accuracy guarantee, but they cannot shoot them worth a ****. Especially once off the bench and practicing actual field conditions. But hey, clearly the rifle MFGs are doing something right to get guys to buy them like candy with those expectations you mention.

Two hunting rifles of mine at 300 yards max -- though these weigh ~13# each, I might consider it if I had $100K to lose. I don't.

At my first engineering job in the early '80's, one of our suppliers was a father and son who were avid shotgunners. The son talked about the betting that went on in crazy quail and live pidgeon shoots. Given this was 1983, $50K back then would be >$180K now.

I've got a Custom 300WSM (9.5lbs weight) that's 1 MOA for 10 shots @100yds no matter what handloaded combo I've fed it off the bench or prone. Funny thing is, some loads looked a lot better than others- even on repeat trips - for 5 rounds. Once I go to 10 shots, 1 MOA. On top of that, when I would get a "flier" testing "bad loads", most of the time I'd have no idea what caused it. Everything felt good, but it had to be me, right??

I certainly wouldn't claim to be an expert marksman, but I do shoot a fair bit for a hunter like many on this forum. I'd never discount the human element of the system. Now, I just accept it and don't get too spun up about it. 1 MOA or less for 10 has become my personal standard for a pretty **** accurate hunting gun, I can't see how that's holding me back. Most of my rifles (and my kids') won't do it. A couple I have needed tuned loads and my WSM is just easy to please for whatever reason.

but hey- what pic are you gonna post in the classifieds if you go to sell a rifle? A pic of a 3, 5, or 10 shot group? 😁

Does anyone have a HUNTING rifle that they'd honestly bet $100K that they can lay down, on demand, and shoot a sub 1/2 MOA, 5 shot group with?
First things first. I don't have $100K for someone to hold, do you? LOL!

I've had a couple once upon a time I would play show and tell with witnesses present in my younger days. Wouldn't think I would play well these days.

Neither was really a 600 yard elk cartridge.

While at a pigeon shoot, one of the guys with us worked at a bank. He remarked that he saw more cash there than he had ever seen at the bank.

Sure, not one group. But if you repeat several 3 shot groups, you have a pretty good proof of what your poi will be on your first shot when hunting. Also, 100yard groups don't readily show the difference between the good from the better.
I shoot at 200 to get a better look.

I concur with your thoughts! We do 300 yard groups…..cause that's what we have to work with! 😉 memtb
