Hornady ELD-X Official Thread

There was a change in tip color due to the potential of copy right infringement or some such...can't remember if that is in this thread or one of the others and I imagine there is ongoing tweeking of the bullet to speed up manufacturing or perhaps even a change in jacket materials, hard to say.

Did the BC change as well? I will have to see what I was loading up to see which one I have. I also hope this doesn't screw with my load also. I was really happy with the ones I have since the load dial in so easy. After looking at that pic a bit I think I have the ones on the right. The one on the left looks more shaped like the 212 ELD-X bullet.

I shot yet another aoudad well two actually. Saturday evenings left me dumbfounded and just further confirms my opinion that aoudad are the toughest sub 500lbs animals there are. First shot was with my 338LM at 170 yards. Went high shoulder and it flattened him in a dramatic fashion but I could see him kicking more than I liked. He flopped behind a small bush and I couldn't see him. I waited a few minutes before walking down. I go with in 50 yards and I see him standing with a huge gapping hole in him. I had my 6.5 creed so I raised it up and shot once in the shoulder which didn't have the effect I wanted so I sent a follow up just in case. Because it wasn't too far off a haul for him to go before he could start going down in the canyon. He piled up just yards from where he had been.

This morning while deer hunting, I had been in the stand for a round half an hour before I opened my window and had a ram 30 yards out. I turned my magnification all the way down and sent a 143 ELD X right into the neck shoulder junction and DRT.

I found a slug from the first one fully expanded and intact. The other came apart I found a fragment in the muscle on the far side.

Heavy bone seems to be very hard on these bullets.

300 SMK exit.

Heavy bones plus high impact velocity tends to be hard on just about any bullet.

We keep waiting on that perfect bullet that performs ideally under all conditions every time but they are as elusive as unicorns and do-do birds.

The bullet looked great passed right into the shoulder meat through the chest cavity into the stomach Then stopped on the opposite side under the hide.

From my very limited experience, the ELD-M seems to be less explosive compared to what people are seeing with the ELD-X. My cousin shot a doe off his farm during red tag season this summer with his 6.5-284 running a 140gr ELD-M at 3050fps. He shot her at 150 yards behind the shoulder and she ran maybe 25 yards and piled up. The exit was behind the offside shoulder and was about 2" in diameter. It did a great job and didn't over expand. We also tested the 140gr ELD Match on a couple ground hogs around 225-250 yards and they did not explode, just left nice golf ball sized exits. To me this seems a lot more stable than what guys are reporting with the ELD-X bullets.

It's sounding like the little cavity in the ELD-X is making the difference between the two.
