In a quandry over a barrel, please help

I have a 7PRC that shoots very well, it's a Defiance, Manners LRH, Proof Carbon bbl......

I also have a 7mm Rem Mag in a trued Rem 700 action with Proof 1:8 twist, Manners EH1 that shoots real well.

Several months ago, I ordered a Krieger .284 cal, 5R grooved, 1:8 twist stainless bbl in #5 bull contour and it is ready to ship. What should I do with it? I think it will be super accurate and I will have it fluted to shave about 8 ozs.

What should I do with it?
LEAVE THE GUNS THAT SHOOT WELL ALONE..... Get another action..... I am not a fan of fluting after barrel is finished lapped....

You are complicating things unnecessarily.

I guess I should have clarified. If OP is considering breaking down one of the 2 tack drivers he has just because he has an extra barrel I'd say don't do it. Hahaha. Spend more time enjoying the ones you got! Cuz how fun is an accruate rifle!!!

YUP,.. THIS ^^^ ( Don't, Do It ) and IMO,.. SELL, the "Truck Axel" Bull, heavy Barrel,.. to somebody else !

You have 2 sevens doing great things now. Put this new barrel in the corner until you know what you really want and then you won't have to wait for the barrel. Give it 6 months Hornady will launch a new 7 to rule them all and you'll be set. You can run their new pointy, flat tipped heat shield bullets in it.

Thank you all for your input. The 7mm Rem mag rifle killed the bull in my avatar, 1 shot at 500 yds, but it's funny, I have never liked that gun. The factory stock grip was real weird and the durn stock was just plain ugly. Hence the recent Manners EH stock. The 7PRC was a full build this last fall and will probably be a plains safari rifle if I continue booking process for 2026.

I have thought about 7SAUM, this cartridge seems to provide lots of performance while using less powder than 7PRC, ergo less recoil.

I can hold this Krieger barrel for now…….

My 6.5x47 Lapua is my favorite rifle, it's silly accurate and great for deer and smaller game. Every animal that has been shot at has died via a 140gr Nosler AB. It's a 1/2 MOA gun to 800 yards.

Thank you all, other comments are welcome, I have thick skin……

Bingo, I'd vote 7-300 PRC. Virtually a 28 nosler clone but you get Lapua brass avaibilty. Get it throated for 195 bergers or heavy mono's. You could run the 160 range hammer or Lazers at blazing speeds.
Isn't that essentially a 7mm LRM??

375 Ruger necked down to .284.

@Don Rackley ,

Are you looking for something "main stream" or something different?

If different, then perhaps something along the lines of the Lazzeroni 7.21 Tomahawk, or a 7mm-378 Weatherby.

I did not recommend any build because I do not know what you have in your inventory or if you are trying to fill a gap.

.25 cal
.26 cal = 6.5 x47
.27 cal
.28 cal = 7MM RM, 7 PRC
.30 cal

I am not a big fan of the .28 cal, so I repurposed my 7MM RM and 7MM STW. However, I was gifted a Ruger M77 MKII in 7MM SAUM, which has sparked my interest in the .28 cal again. I have not started loading for it yet, but I have some bullets to experiment with.
  • 115 Raptor CEB
  • 145/155 MTH CEB
  • 140/175 Berger
  • 162 Hornady ELD-M
  • 168 Black Hole
Good luck!
