I know this is outside of your parameters, but, for deer, I've settled on an 18" 6mm creed shooting 105 AMAX at 3040 fps with RL26 (substitute 108 or 109 ELDM or similar). Does great on deer, even the old 105 is doing over 2k fps at 600 yards. The newer, higher BC bullets would be even better...

I agree with all of this except "Your comments about a longer barrel will give higher velocity and less muzzle flip counteract each other. Muzzle flip or jump is simply a product of the amount of energy put into a rifle system. Longer barrel means more velocity, more velocity means more recoil...

If 308 was enough gun for what you're hunting, and you want to go lightweight on the build, I'd be looking to go down in cartridge size, not up. Light rifles are great to carry, but can be tough to shoot well. I'd look towards 6mm or 25 Creed. Those have become my favorite deer size game cartridges

Update on an old thread in case anyone is researching. I built a 22 creed with a 25" 6.5 tw barrel. Shooting the 95 SMK at 3200 with no issues. Plan to shoot hammers for hunting deer with it.

I'll second 22 creed. 77 TMK or 80 ELDM or a hammer bullet are all perfect for deer. Lots of speed, extremely low recoil.
