My Father's family owned a slaughterhouse. Dad was an avid .45 Colt shooter, the vet who inspected the slaughterhouse was an archery hunter. They tested the comparative penetration of Dad's .45 Colt SAA 7.5" and the vet's 80 lb bow. They used the carcass of a 2000 lb horse that was there...

The people I'm reading arn't mag authors. They are experienced hunters. You should not disregard your experience, but you should be willing to admit that other people may, lefitimately, have different experiences. Sometimes those people have far more experience than you. Another example is the...

Everyone learns from someone else, including you, if you think about it. So, I can look for expert opinions, or I can listen to whoever comes along. I try to listen to experts. There's so much to learn in this world that you can't learn it all from hands-on experience. Be grateful that I...

On looking, I find diametrically opposed assessments of Woodleigh bullets. One PH contributor at Africa Hunting does not like them, having experienced blowup using them in larger bores. Those comments date to 2017. On the other side is Nathan Foster at Terminal Ballistics Studies, who thinks...

Everything I've seen says AK Fish & Game are realists. They think the .30-06 is fine with proper bullets. They also think you need a guide if you don't live up there. The guide is performing his intended function when he shoots. I'd bet he observes you, your shooting capability, and your...

Remember that .35 Whelen isn't a high speed magnum. Lot of difference in bullet performance between 3000 fps MV and 2400 fps MV. That Speer bullet has stood the test of time on many large animals, but its not best paired with high velocity.

    Brown bear Rifle

Never hunted bears. But, my Father taught me not to just shoot a good shot, but to be fast on with follow ups. For deer, he liked his Winchester 88 in .284 because it was fast. A bolt rifle can be operated very quickly, but you have to practice it. Dad used to drill me with a Springfield he...

Nothing wrong with a 35 Whelen. 250 Swift A-Frame or Woodleigh Weldcore. Many people have had good performance from the Speer 250 HotCore, which can be pushed out to 2700 fps out of the Whelen. I'd go Woodleigh Weldcore, a round point is better for closer work. Mr. Schumacher says a .30-06...

I think maybe you can form brass from .30-30 brass, though it comes out just a tad shorter than spec, or from .38-55. Search the internet, there are some videos out there. Redding makes some oddball forming dies, might have something of use to you. I think you have a rare and magical rifle...

Yes. I saw pheasants all the time 50 years ago. I haven't seen one in years.

    What’s your spookiest hunting experience?

You're very lucky. I've seen one cougar, not while in the mountians, but as I stopped to empty the tank on a N-S highway up in NE Wa. I was idly eyeing the river bar some 300 ft below me (Columbia River) and spotted the lion looking over a fallen log at a deer about 75 yards from him. Deer...

    What’s your spookiest hunting experience?

A pheasant did that to me, and i'm now really missing the ten years it took off my life. I always wondered how, with a bird that explosive, anyone could shoulder a gun and get on that bird before its out of range !
